Technology is playing an ever-increasing role in today’s industrial marketplace as a means of driving cost out of the supply channel. It is IDI’s belief that the “best-inclass vendor programs of tomorrow” will be based less on “distributor volume”, and more focused on “distributors that are easiest to transact with”.

The National Chains have figured this out, with many of them now mandating e-commerce capability from their core vendors. By circumventing the need to utilize the vendors’ CSR’s, the vendors pass along these channel cost reductions to the National Chains. So... who are left paying for those CSR’s to re-enter orders? IDI shareholders... and you.

The challenge for the independent distributor to build a similar infrastructure is total cost vis-à-vis their business volume with each vendor – most reasonably-sized independents cannot justify this cost outside of a handful of their top vendors. And this is where the power of the “group” works in your favour.

Since 2009, IDI has been developing an e-comm network that accommodates our shareholders and vendors – all on different Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems – passing electronic documents

to each other. Development is on-going, and the end result will be a complete e-comm network that facilitates PO’s, Order Acknowledgements, Invoices, shareholder payments to vendors, vendor payments to shareholders, consolidated PO error reports, and automated shareholder rebate tracking – all without the need for human intervention.

IDI is then able to leverage the significant cost reductions in the transaction process by negotiating incremental rebate programs, over-and-above our purchasing rebates, with each IDI Connects vendor.


The benefits to the IDI shareholder are significant:


  • One e-comm connection = electronic access to dozens of IDI vendors

  • Significantly reduced shipment errors, as orders are only entered once – by the distributor

  • Purchasing efficiencies – PO’s are exported right from your ERP system instead of using out-dated ordering processes (phone/fax/email)

  • Relevant enhancements to their ERP systems (i.e. the ability to export and receive e-files)

  • Incremental rebates that initially pay for their system enhancements, but quickly get taken to their bottom line
